The recent debutants in the Indian Premier League universe, the Lucknow Super Giants have had a decent start to their IPL journey. Twice they finished in the top 4, and only once in 2023 were they not able to end up in the top 4. However, even with their consistent run in the tournament, they have yet to get their hands on their maiden IPL Trophy, and that is something that will be on their minds as they prepare for IPL 2025.

If rumours are to be true, it would be a big change in the Lucknow Super Giants leadership, and their retention strategy given KL Rahul won’t be with the team anymore. Scenario One – 4 Players Retained

If we talk about the first scenario where LSG may retain 4 players, the first player that they are likely to retain is Nicholas Pooran. Pooran is a match-winner, and one of the most dangerous batters in World Cricket. Even if required, Pooran can be retained at the highest price bracket as not only is he a super batter, but he is also a potential leader for the team for IPL 2025.

For the second player slot, LSG will mostly look at the young and potential Mayank Yadav. Mayank impressed everyone with his raw pace in IPL 2024. While pace is something that leads to wayward line and length, Mayank, quite surprisingly had brilliant control over his line and length. Hopefully, Mayank recovers from his injury soon as he is also in line for a national team call-up.

Talking about the third player on the retention list, we should mostly see Marcus Stoinis as the probable contender. Stoinis has been brilliant in the IPL and while playing for Australia. Given his all-round ability, he is still a force to reckon with in the T20 format. Meanwhile, for the fourth retention, Ravi Bishnoi seems an easy pick. Bishnoi is the number 2 spinner in India currently, and is also representing the Indian team. So, overall, expect LSG to retain Pooran, Mayank, Stoinis, and Bishnoi as the four players.

Scenario Two – 5 Players Retained

Moving on to scenario two, and which is retaining 5 players, LSG have good options in the form of Krunal Pandya, Devdutt Padikkal, Quinton de Kock, Deepak Hooda, Ayush Badoni, and Naveen Ul-Haq. Among these players, LSG should mostly back Krunal for another 2-3 years cycle. Krunal may not be the most flamboyant name, but his all-round utility makes him a worthy contender.

Scenario Three – 6 Players Retained

Finally, talking about scenario 3, which is retaining 6 players, LSG should mostly retain Quinton de Kock in addition to retaining the other 5 players in the form of Nicholas Pooran, Mayank Yadav, Marcus Stoinis, Ravi Nishnoi, Krunal Pandya. While these are 6 solid retentions, in case LSG and KL Rahul decide to stay with LSG, in that case, Krunal Pandya may miss out, and the other 5 retentions stay.
