IPL 2024: Best Spinners Ranking and Rating for All 10 Teams

Chennai Super Kings, the standout as we look at the ranking and rating of the best spinners of all 10 teams for IPL 2024.

Be it 2008 or 2024, the role of spinners in the Indian Premier League was and will always be a crucial one. While bowling in powerplay and death overs is an art for a fast bowler, taking wickets in the middle phase of the match is an art of the spin bowlers. Needless to say, they are one of the most important types of bowlers in every team.

The year 2024 will see as many as 62 spinners Participating in the tournament, which is roughly 6 spinners per team. While CSK and MI have the maximum number of spinners in a team at 8, RR and Delhi Capitals have the least number of spinners in a team at 5. But how about the quality of spinners in each team?

As we know, having spinners in abundance doesn’t necessarily mean the team has better spinners. Ideally, every team needs to 2 good spinners, one good backup spinner, and 1 decent backup spinner. So, even a 4 number is good for any team when it comes to spinners. Having said that, let’s look at the ranking and rating of spinners for each team for IPL 2024. using our unique methodology.  

Methodology:

• Spinners are classified as two good spinners, one good backup spinner, and one decent backup spinner
• All spinners are relatively rated on a scale of 10 against the benchmark spinners, basis their IPL and T20 performance in the last three years

Benchmark Spinner for IPL 2024: Rashid Khan

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Undoubtedly the worst spin attack for IPL 2024 belongs to Royal Challengers Bangalore. When you have Karn Sharma as your leading spinner and Glenn Maxwell as your second-best spinner, there is no second thought on what the overall spin attack looks like for RCB. While Karan Sharma is rated at 7.75, Maxwell is rated at 7.25. Overall, RCB’s spinners rating stands at just 6.92 with the backups included.

Two Best Spinners: Karn Sharma & Glenn Maxwell (o)

Backup Spinners: Mahipal Lomror, Mayank Dagar, Swapnil Singh & Himanshu Sharma

Punjab Kings

At number 9, we have the Punjab Kings, who are decently placed at a rating of 7.77, but relatively have a weaker spin attack. PBKS have Rahul Chahar as their leading spinner at 8.5. But barring Chahar, there isn’t any big name with uncapped Harpreet Brar and Sikandar Raza at 7.5 points. Aside from these three, there’s Liam Livingstone as the only decent spinner in the squad. 

IPL 2024 Spinners for Punjab Kings (PBKS) – 7.77

Two Best Spinners: Rahul Chahar & Harpreet Brar

Backup Spinners: Liam Livingstone (o), Sikandar Raza (o), Tanay Thyagarajann, Vishwanath Singh & Prince Choudhary 

Delhi Capitals

Coming to number 8, we have the Delhi Capitals team with a rating of 7.96 for their spinners. Technically, Delhi Capitals have two good spinners in the form of Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel with a rating of 9.25 and 8.5 respectively. However, barring these two, there’s inexperience with Lalit Yadav at 6.5 and others below that.

Backup Spinners: Lalit Yadav, Pravin Dubey & Vicky Ostwal

Mumbai Indians

Coming to number 7, we have the Mumbai Indians team with a rating of 8.02. The ranking is an upgrade for Mumbai Indians, who were strangled at the bottom last year for their spin attack. The addition of Mohammad Nabi and Shreyas Gopal makes the spin attack of MI relatively strong. With Piyush Chawla ay 8.75 as their best spinner, MI have good support from Shams Mulani and Kumar Kartikeya. 

IPL 2024 Spinners for Mumbai Indians (MI) – 8.02

Two Best Spinners: Piyush Chawla & Mohammad Nabi (o)

Backup Spinners: Naman Dhir, Nehal Wadhera, Shams Mulani, Shivalik Sharma, Kumar Kartikeya, & Shreyas Gopal

Sunrisers Hyderabad

At number 6, we have the Sunrisers Hyderabad team with a rating of 8.12 for their spinners. SRH have two really good spinners in the form of Wanindu Hasaranaga and Washington Sundar with a rating of 8.5 and 8.25 respectively. These are good ratings for the top 2 spinners. In addition, SRH also have Mayank Markande at 8 and Shahbaz Ahmed at 7.25 to keep their rating at 8.12.  

IPL 2024 Spinners for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) – 8.12

Two Best Spinners: Wanindu Hasaranga (o) & Washington Sundar

Backup Spinners: Abhishek Sharma, Shahbaz Ahmed, Jhathavedh Subramanyan & Mayank Markande

Lucknow Super Giants

Talking about the number 5 position, we have the Lucknow Super Giants with a rating of 8.19 for their spinners. LSG have India’s first-choice spinner Ravi Bishnoi at 9.5 and old fox Amit Mishra at 8. But barring these two, LSG have a decent backup spin attack with Krunal Pandya at 7.5 and Krishnappa Gowtham at 7. The team also has two more backup spinners as a good contingency plan.   

IPL 2024 Spinners for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) – 8.19

Two Best Spinners: Ravi Bishnoi & Amit Mishra

Backup Spinners: Deepak Hooda, Krishnappa Gowtham, Krunal Pandya & M. Siddharth 

Gujarat Titans

At the number 4 position, we have the Gujarat Titans team with a really good rating of 8.56 for their spinners. The Afghan spin twins, Rashid Khan and Noor Ahmad are the team’s best spinners with a rating of 10 and 8.25 respectively. It is Rashid Khan who shifted their rating a lot as their other spinners like Rahul Tewatia and R Sai Kishore have a rating of 7.5 and 7.75 respectively.   

IPL 2024 Spinners for Gujarat Titans (GT) – 8.56

Two Best Spinners: Rashid Khan (o) & Noor Ahmad (o),

Backup Spinners: Jayant Yadav, Rahul Tewatia, Manav Suthar & R Sai Kishore

Rajasthan Royals

Coming to the top 3, Rajasthan Royals take this position with a rating of 8.75 for their spinners. This is a really good rating for RR who have the trio of Yuzvendra Chahal, Adam Zampa, and Ravichandran Ashwin in their spin department with a rating of 9.75, 9.25, and 8.25 respectively. With such a strong spin trio, the fourth spinner is a letdown for RR with Abid Mushtaq at a 6.5 rating. 

IPL 2024 Spinners for Rajasthan Royals (RR) – 8.75

Two Best Spinners: Adam Zampa (o) & Yuzvendra Chahal

Backup Spinners: Abid Mushtaq, Ravichandran Ashwin & Riyan Parag 

Kolkata Knight Riders

Coming to the number 2 position, we have the Kolkata Knight Riders team with a rating of 8.94. KKR are almost neck-and-neck with CSK with marginal difference in terms of quality. KKR have three really strong spinners in the form of Varun Chakravary, Sunil Narine, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman as they form a rating of 9.75, 8.75, and 8.75 respectively. In addition, KKR have Suyash Sharma as a really good backup spinner.   

IPL 2024 Spinners for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) – 8.94

Two Best Spinners: Varun Chakravarthy & Sunil Narine (o)

Backup Spinners: Anukul Roy, Mujeeb Rahman (o) & Suyash Sharma

Chennai Super Kings 

Finally, at numero uno, we have Chennai Super Kings with a rating of 8.96 for their spinners. Similar to KKR, CSK have three strong spinners in the form of Ravindra Jadeja, Maheesh Theekshana, and Mitchell Santner with a rating of 9.5, 9, and 9 respectively. It doesn’t end there as CSK also have Moeen Ali and Rachin Ravindra to complement their supreme spin bowling attack.
