IPL 2024: Best Retained Squad List for Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai Indians to retain 19 names as we look at the confirmed retained squad and players list for MI for IPL 2024.

The 5-times IPL champions, Mumbai Indians must already be gearing up for finalizing the players they would want to retain ahead of IPL 2024. Mumbai Indians haven’t had a successful outing in IPL since 2021 as they finished fifth, tenth, and fourth respectively in 2021, 2022, and 2023 respectively.

It has been a see-saw battle for MI in the last three years, and finishing fourth can never be considered a success for a team that has 5 titles in 16 years. The team was certainly hit by injuries last year as their best pacer Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out for the whole tournament, and Jofra Archer played only a few matches.

But with IPL 2024 only a few months, how about we analyze the current squad list for Mumbai Indians, and find out the best possible players that MI could retain ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction? Meanwhile, per the leading website, Betway Satta, Mumbai Indians are third favorite to win IPL 2024 with odds at 2.1.

IPL 2024 – Best Predicted Retained Players List for Mumbai Indians:

Batters – Dewald Brevis (o), Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma & Tim David (o)

Mumbai Indians should retain a total of 5 batters for the 17th edition of IPL. Apart from their Captain Rohit Sharma, we should see MI retaining Dewald Brevis, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Tim David. While SKY is their best batter, Brevis and David have been quite good overseas batting duo for them. Whereas Tilak Varma has been a promising youngster.

WKs – Ishan Kishan, Tristan Stubbs (o) & Vishnu Vinod

For the Wicket-keepers, Mumbai Indians will once again rely on their star wicket-keeper opener, Ishan Kishan. Kishan has shown great signs as an opener for India and MI, so expect him to once again lead the keeping duties. Whereas Tristian Stubbs and Vishnu Vinod will play the role of backup keepers for MI.

Spin All-rounders – Hrithik Shokeen, Nehal Wadhera & Shams Mulani

For the Spin All-rounders, MI doesn’t have great names to look at. MI, who generally play only 3-4 matches on spin-friendly conditions doesn’t invest much in spinners or spin-bowling all-rounders. This can be seen from their players set as the inexperienced trio of Hrithik Shokeen, Nehal Wadhera, and Shams Mulani shall lead the spin all-rounders for them.

Pace All-rounders – Arjun Tendulkar, Arshad Khan, Cameron Green (o), Jofra Archer (o) & Romario Shephard

For the pace all-rounders, Mumbai Indians shall retain four names in the form of Arjun Tendulkar, Arshad Khan, Cameron Green, and Jofra Archer. The main question for MI would be to retain Duan Jansen for the upcoming edition. Well, seeing how Duan has been progressing, MI may not want to keep Duan as an option, and instead may look at a fresh player in the Auction.

Other than him, Mumbai Indians will be keen to see how Jofra Archer’s injury is progressing. MI would need their star pacer to be tournament fit by March, next year. While Jofra may not be released even if he isn’t able to recover on time. Instead, MI shall look at a replacement when the confirmation comes in.

Spinners – Kumar Kartikeya, Piyush Chawla & Raghav Goyal

Coming to spinners, the situation is the same as the spin all-rounders. There aren’t many big names to look at for MI, and the team will rely on Kumar Kartikeya, Piyush Chawla, and Raghav Goyal. While Piyush Chawla may be given a go after a stunning IPL 2023, Kartikeya and Raghav Goyal may be retained for the promise.

Pacers – Akash Madhwal & Jasprit Bumrah

Talking about the pacers, Mumbai Indians will have to decide on the future of Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, and Chris Jordan. As of today, none of these four bowlers are in contention for their national side. So, it would be a surprise to see if Mumbai Indians retain any of them.

Letting go of these four pacers. MI would have a space of three overseas spots in the final 25. This would be a huge thing for MI, who can then invest in at least 2 overseas pacers. Barring this idea, Mumbai Indians will also let go of Sandeep Warrier, who came in as a replacement of Bumrah, but didn’t get a chance to play.

So, overall, Mumbai Indians should let go of 7 players ahead of the IPL 2024 Auction. The list includes Duan Jansen, Jason Behrendorff, Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, Chris Jordan, Sandeep Warrier, and Ramandeep Singh. Nevertheless, here’s the best predicted retained squad and players list for Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024.

IPL 2024: Predicted Retained Squad Players List for Mumbai Indians (MI)

So, that’s about the retained squad and players list for Mumbai Indians (MI) for IPL 2024. Overall, Mumbai Indians should retain 21 players with a space of 6 more players. The main dilemma would be to retain or release their overseas pace contingent, which at the moment looks below par.
