IPL 2023: All 10 Teams Latest Playoffs Qualification Scenarios

Gujarat Titans to finish in the top 2 as we look at the latest playoffs qualification scenarios for the remaining 8 teams for IPL 2023.

We are in the final week of the IPL 2023 Group stage with 5 matches in our hands. As of Match 65 only Gujarat Titans have qualified for the Playoffs and Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad have been eliminated. As many as 7 more teams are in contention for the Playoffs, and the next 7 matches will see epic clashes.

It won’t be an understatement to say, but IPL 2023 has got to be one of the most competitive tournaments ever in IPL history. The fact that the gap between the topper and the tenth-ranked team can at max stay at 12 points shows the same with a possibility of this getting reduced to 8 points.

We are now left with 5 matches, and there are some really important fixtures coming up in the form of PBKS vs RR, DC vs CSK, MI vs SRH, and RCB vs GT. With RCB vs GT scheduled last, the excitement shall last until the last group stage match of the tournament. So, as we wait for the matches to begin, let’s look at the IPL 2023 Playoffs Qualification Scenarios rankings for all 10 teams.  

#10: Sunrisers Hyderabad

M: 13 // PTS: 8 // NRR: -0.558

Next matches: MI (A)

Number 10 sees Sunrisers Hyderabad, who are also eliminated as they can at max get to 12 points.

#9: Delhi Capitals

M: 13 // PTS: 10 // NRR: -0.572

A number 9, we have Delhi Capitals, who are eliminated as they can at max get to 12 points.

#8: Punjab Kings

M: 13 // PTS: 12 // NRR: -0.308

Next matches: RR (H)

At number 6, we have Punjab Kings, who are currently in the eighth position with 12 points from 13 games. However, a loss against Delhi Capitals have almost dented their chances for the Playoffs spot. Even if they win their last match, they need to win that by a huge margin of 100+ runs or chase the target of 180-200 in 12 odd overs. The hope RCB and MI don’t end up on 16 points. Only then, they can have a realistic chance.

#7: Kolkata Knight Riders

M: 13 // PTS: 12 // NRR: -0.256

Next matches: LSG (H)

A win against CSK may have boosted Kolkata Knight Riders’ qualification chances, but it seems a little too late. KKR are currently sitting in the seventh position with 12 points from 13 games. A big win of 100+ runs or chase of 17-180 in 12 overs against LSG will put them on 14 points with a positive NRR. However, that would not be enough as they would then need to hope for RCB to lose their last match, and MI and RR lose at least once.

#6: Rajasthan Royals

M: 13 // PTS: 12 // NRR: +0.140

Next matches: PBKS (A)

What a pity season this has been for Rajasthan Royals so far. They won 4 of their first 5 matches before losing 6 of the remaining 8. They are on borderline, and can at max get to 14 points with a win in their last game. However, that would not be enough as they would have to hope for RCB, MI, and PBKS to lose at least once.

#5: Mumbai Indians 

M: 13 // PTS: 14 // NRR: -0.128

Next matches: SRH (H)

It has been a mixed bag season for Mumbai Indians this year. They currently have 14 points from 13 games, and a loss against LSG in their last game hurt them badly. Needless to say, MI need to win big in their last game, and also hope RCB lose their last game. If MI lose their next match, their qualification scenario looks bleak as MI would then hope RR lose against PBKS and RCB lose big against SRH – an unrealistic scenario.

#4: Royal Challengers Bangalore

M: 13 // PTS: 14 // NRR: +0.180

Next matches: GT (H)

At number 4, we have Royal Challengers Bangalore. RCB turned things around in their last two games with big wins against RR and SRH. RCB currently have 14 points from 13 games, and a win in the last game should be enough for them to qualify. Thankfully, RCB are playing last, so they exactly know what they need to do to qualify for the Playoffs.

#3: Lucknow Super Giants

M: 13 // PTS: 15 // NRR: +0.304

Next matches: KKR (A)

Even without their star batter and Captain, KL Rahul, Lucknow Super Giants have done fairly well in the last 3 matches with 2 wins and 1 loss. With 15 points from 13 games, LSG are all but through to the Playoffs unless they lose their next match and two of MI, PBKS, and RCB end on 16 points. It is a possibility, but the probability is too less. With LSG playing the third last game, they can’t rely on the last two matches. Hence, they got to win their next match, and also have a shot at the top 2 spots with a big win.

#2: Chennai Super Kings

M: 13 // PTS: 15 // NRR: +0.381

Next matches: DC (A)

A loss against KKR has put Chennai Super Kings’ qualification in a mix. They now have 15 points from 13 games, and are only left with 1 away game against the tenth-ranked Delhi Capitals. Technically, a win should do for CSK, but they are up against a spirited Delhi Capitals. But if CSK lose, they would have to hope RCB and PBKS lose at least once. That way, CSK can qualify even with 15 points.

Meanwhile, for CSK to finish in the top 2, they definitely have to win their last game to take them to 17 points. That would still not be enough as LSG can surpass them. A win for LSG in the last game vs MI have kept them afloat for the top 2 spots. CSK are neck-and-neck with LSG in terms of NRR, but with LSG playing after CSK, CSK would need to win big in their next match for a shot at the top 2 spots.

Next matches: RCB (A)

A win against Sunrisers Hyderabad means Gujarat Titans have not only qualified for the Playoffs, but have also made sure they finish in the top 2.

So, that’s about the ranking of all 10 teams based on their IPL 2023 Playoffs Qualification Scenarios. Looking at the ranking, it looks like GT, LSG & CSK for sure should qualify. Whereas between the other 5 teams, RCB have a decent chance followed by MI, PBKS, and RR.
