India vs WI 2022: 1st ODI Best Predicted Playing 11 – Hooda to Debut
Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer set to miss as we look at the best predicted playing 11 for Team India for the 1st ODI vs West Indies (WI).
Just as we were waiting for Team India’s exciting home season to begin, we were exposed to a piece of unfortunate news. Team India’s 4 key players, Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, and Navdeep Saini were tested positive for COVID-19. It is almost but sure that they won’t be a part of the ODI series anymore.
The ODI series brings a strong challenge to the Indian team. The current West Indies may not be as strong as their predecessor, but they have a lot of dynamic players in their squad who can turn a match on their own. It will also be a strong dress rehearsal for West Indies and India ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.
Historically, West Indies and India are almost neck-and-neck in terms of total stats. Out of a total of 133 ODIs, they have played against each other, India have won 64 and West Indies have won 63. The 3-match ODI will give West Indies to level equal against India or India might take their win record further with a series win.

So, having seen the stats, what can be the best predicted playing 11 for Team India for the 1st ODI vs West Indies? Let’s find out in this article. Meanwhile, according to Betway, India start as favourites to win the 1st ODI match with Odds in their favour. For Team India’s win, the odds are at 7/1. Whereas for West Indies’ win, the odds are at 4/1.
Predicted Playing 11 for Team India
Openers: Rohit Sharma & Ishan Kishan
An unfortunate loss of Shikhar Dhawan and Ruturaj Gaikwad meant India had to rope in a reserve player in the form of Mayank Agarwal or Ishan Kishan. Of the two, Rohit has already confirmed in the press conference that Ishan Kishan would be opening alongside him for the 1st ODI. This also gives a good right-hand and left-hand batting combination.
Middle-order: Virat Kohli & Rishabh Pant
The middle-order will see a change with KL Rahul not available for the first ODI and Shreyas Iyer ruled out due to COVID-19. The number 3 position is fixed, and GOAT Virat Kohli will continue playing his best at 3. Whereas at 4, Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant will bring the only left-handed batter in the squad. With a fragile lower-order, both will have to take more responsibilities while batting.
Finishers: Suryakumar Yadav & Deepak Hooda
Coming to the finishers, the absence of KL Rahul or Shreyas Iyer means Deepak Hooda is set to make his International debut. The 26-year old is an exciting prospect, and a brilliant hitter of the ball. Ignoring his inconsistencies in the IPL, Deepak can actually be a great value add if he manages to control his temperament.
Supporting Deepak will be Suryakumar Yadav at number 5. Surya has been performing brilliantly in International cricket ever since he made his debut for India. With Hardik and Jadeja not there, Suryakumar Yadav will have to own the finishing duties for Team India. On top it this, both Surya and Deepak are good part-time bowling options.
Bowling All-rounders: Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur & Deepak Chahar
The bowling all-rounders will see the trio of Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar play together at 7, 8, and 9 respectively. Their presence increases the depth in the batting significantly. Apart from being valuable options in the bowling, all three have been performing brilliantly with the bat of late. This is their chance to impress once again before the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.
Bowlers: Mohammed Siraj & Yuzvendra Chahal
Coming to the final two spots, it would be a fight between Mohammed Siraj vs Prasidh Krishna and Ravi Bishnoi vs Yuzvendra Chahal. While Chahal is undoubtedly the best spinner in the team, Siraj might be preferred above Prasidh being a slightly experienced candidate. It would not be wise to leave any of these two as they are wicket-takers and have experience.
So, that completes the best predicted playing 11 for Team India for the 1st ODI vs West Indies (WI). Overall, there are only 2 positions that are debatable. That is Mayank vs Kishan and Prasidh vs Siraj. It would be interesting to see what Rohit Sharma opts for.
