In a not-so-convincing fashion, the Test series comes to an end with India winning it 1-0. It’s unfortunate for Team India, who couldn’t end up on the winning side of the 2nd Test as Rain played spoilsport. India would be cursing their luck as they lose crucial 8 points, which can come in handy for the WTC final qualification.

Nevertheless, after an action-packed Test series, the action now moves to the most awaited format of the year, the ODIs. India would be playing West Indies for a 3-match ODI series, which will act as a stepping stone for Team India’s preparation for the marquee event of the year, the ODI World Cup 2023.

Historically, India have had the better of the West Indies in ODIs. Of the 139 ODIs India and West Indies have played against each other, India have ended up winning 70 and losing 63 of them. However, since 1st Jan 2000, India have won 49 times, while losing only 23 times. So, the current scenario makes India the favourite for the ODI series.

Team India’s Best Predicted Playing 11

Openers: Rohit Sharma (c) & Shubman Gill

Team India have four openers in the squad in the form of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Ishan Kishan. But they would stick to their preferred and proven opening pair of Captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. This pair should continue to open for at least the first two ODIs before Team India does any experimentation in the third ODI. 

Middle-order: Virat Kohli & Sanju Samson (wk)

Coming to the middle-order, the main question that Team India would ask themselves is whether to play Ishan Kishan in the middle-order, a position that is unusual to him, or play a specialist wicket-keeper in the form of Sanju Samson. Well, given the seniority, Ishan Kishan seems more senior currently. However, as a strategic move, India may opt for Sanju Samson as the keeper of the squad. 

Selecting Samson seems a logical move given Kishan isn’t too comfortable playing in the middle-order. Whereas Sanju is more apt to play in the middle-order, even though Kishan brings the strategy of playing a lefty in the middle-order. Meanwhile, Kohli should make the most of his current form while batting at number 3 for Team India. 

Finishers: Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav & Ravindra Jadeja

Talking about the finishers, all eyes shall be on Suryakumar Yadav, who registered three successive ducks in the last ODI series vs Australia. In this series, we should mostly see Surya in the number 6 position. This would be an apt position for him as he is most likely to come around the 30th over mark, which makes him sync his batting to the T20 format, where he is a champion.

For the all-rounder finishers, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja shall be the primary all-rounders of the squad. Given that Hardik has started bowling, he is a big positive for India. Meanwhile, India also have Axar Patel, but Axar can wait unless there is a need for 3 spinners in the squad. 

Bowlers: Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav, Umran Malik & Mohammed Siraj  

Coming to the bowling department, India have selected 5 pacers and 2 spinners in the squad. Of the five pacers, Unadkat hasn’t played a lot of ODIs, and Mukesh shall play his first ODI if given an opportunity. So, for the time being, we should mostly see Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Umran Malik leading the pace duties for Team India.

For the spin department, the choice shall be between Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. It is difficult to leave out any of these. But given India’s preference off late for Kuldeep Yadav, he should continue to lead the spin attack ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal. However, if the pitch does assist spin, India may opt for both with Umran seating out.
