India vs England 2025 Best Squad and Players List for ODI Series
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play in our potential squad and players list for the India vs England 2025 ODI series.
Ever since the 2023 ODI World Cup came to a successful conclusion, it feels ages when we last saw the Indian team, and the star Indian players playing ODIs. The sport has mostly seen the dominance of the Indian Premier League, Test, or T20I series post the completion of the 2023 WC. But come 2025, ODIs will once again be in fashion with Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and UAE being the biggest event of the year.
As India prepare for the Champions Trophy, the biggest issue for the team is a lack of practice, and inconsistent team selection. The last ODI series that India played was in August, and before that in 2023. India were shockingly whitewashed in the ODIs series vs Sri Lanka in August, and India were without a few first-choice players in that. India almost played a B team in that series, which might not have benefitted the team with the Champions Trophy in mind.
But with a vision to have a solid core squad before the Indian team heads for the Champions Trophy 2025, India have only one ODI series to finalize the squad, and that’s the India vs England series. 3 matches are all India have to finalize their final 15-member squad for Champions Trophy 2025, and barring Bumrah, India should select a near-to-final ODI squad that they are likely to select for the Champions Trophy. So, considering the best-case scenario, let’s look at the India vs England 2025 potential ODI series squad.
India vs England ODI Squad 2025 Explained
There are rumours about Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah being decided to be given rest for the ODI series. While Bumrah should definitely be given rest considering his workload, Rohit and Kohli should continue with this ODI series as they don’t play T20Is anymore, so they will get sufficient rest before the ODI series. Hence, both these players should make sure they are available, and don’t decide to opt out.
Starting with batters, Team India have a settled set of batters that are most likely expected to continue in the ODI series vs England. While Captain Rohit Sharma, opener Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer should be the first-choice pure batters, among wicket-keepers, India should go ahead with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Overall, 6 batters out of 15-16 players may sound a little thin, but India may want to have more potential all-rounders in the side to extend the bowling and batting depth.
Aside from these 6 players, the ones that may be seen as backups or even in the squad if India decide to select more than 16, we should look at the likes of Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Sai Sudharsan, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. While getting into the final 15 players seems difficult for them, they will play a role if any of the first-choice 15 players get injured.
Nitish Reddy to Debut?
Talking about all-rounders, India will select as many as 5 names in the squad. The rise of Nitish Reddy has been phenomenal, and India won’t mind giving Nitish Reddy a chance in the ODI series vs England. Nitish might take a place in the squad in place of an extra batter, and that isn’t a bad option to have given his success in Test and T20 cricket off late. He can be a brilliant backup for Hardik Pandya, and India would want to groom him under him.
Aside from Nitish Reddy, India will continue with their regular 4 all-rounders, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. While Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will be the leading all-rounders in the side, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar will add for good backups, and also add batting depth if India decide to have batting till number 8.
Talking about bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah will mostly get the well-deserved rest before he is fresh for the Champions Trophy Whereas Mohammed Shami may still not be completely fit to get a selection straight away. So, among pacers, Mohammed Siraj should lead the bowling with support from Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Harshit Rana. The Pacers lack experience, but that’s what the transition Indian team is currently going through. For the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav should once again be the leading spinner.
