England vs India 2022: 1st ODI Best Predicted Playing 11 for both Teams
Shikhar Dhawan back in the business as we look at the 2022 England vs India 1st ODI best predicted playing 11 for both the teams.
Update on July 11, 8 pm: There’s news circulating about Virat Kohli missing the optional training session having sustained a Groin Injury. If at all he misses the 1st ODI, Shreyas Iyer should replace him at number 3 from the playing 11 shown below.
After seeing the Test series ending on 2-2, Team India have bounced back pretty well to defeat England 2-1 in the 3-match T20 series. India were leading 2-0, and could have ended 3-0 had they not fielded a Tier 2 bowling line-up without Bumrah, Bhuvi, and Chahal.
Nevertheless, with India’s tour to England now standing at 2-1 with Test Series ending as a Tie at 1-1 and the T20 series in India’s favour at 2-1, the drama now moves to the ODI series. It would be a 3-match ODI series being played from July 12 to July 17.
Both teams will be fielding a slightly revamped squad. While India will have the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Mohammed Shami, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur back in the ODI squad, England will be boosted by the return of Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes.
With the first ODI scheduled tomorrow July 12, let’s look at England vs India 2022 1st ODI best predicted playing 11 for both the teams. Before that, let’s look at the key historical stats between both the teams, key match details, and Team India’s official ODI series squad.

Playing 11 for Both Teams:
Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan are set to open for Team India in the 1st ODI vs England. Dhawan, who only plays ODIs is one of the best openers for Team India in the 50-overs format. Both Dhawan and Rohit have been opening for Team India in ODIs since 2013, and have done a fairly commendable job.
The middle-order shall see Virat Kohli at 3, Rishabh Pant at 4, and Suryakumar Yadav at 5. This is a straightforward selection in the absence of KL Rahul. India would need their best ODI batter, Virat Kohli back in the form. He has been off the radar in the last few series, and it is important for him and India to be among runs.
Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja shall be the two all-rounders for Team India. It’s been quite a while since these two played together, and India would be happy to see the welcome change. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal shall lead the spin duties for Team India alongside Ravindra Jadeja.
From the pace standpoint, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami shall be the two primary pacers of the squad. The Player of the series in the recent T20I series, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is not a part of ODI Squad, so for the third pacer slot, Team India have 4 options to look at in the form of Siraj, Shardul, Prasidh, and Arshdeep.
The selection of the 3rd pacer would completely depend on what India need from him. Ideally, India need a bowler who can bowl well in the Middle and Death Overs. From the available lot, both Shardul and Prasidh are worthy contenders. However, Prasidh was the POTS in the previous ODI series, so could get the nod.
England vs India 2022: 1st ODI Predicted Playing 11 for Team India
Rohit Sharma (C), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah & Yuzvendra Chahal
For England, the return of Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, and Joe Root will bring selection headaches. The batting line-up was quite belligerent vs the Netherlands, but will now see a few changes in the squad with the return of the trio. Seeing the combination, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow should open with Root at number 3 most probably.
In the absence of Eoin Morgan, the middle-order and all-rounder department shall comprise Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Liam Livingstone, and Moeen Ali. This is a cracking batting line-up with great depth until number 7. There could be a possibility of England including Dawid Malan at 4 by dropping a spinner given that England would still have 6 bowlers.
The bowling shall most probably see the pace of Sam Curran, David Willey, and Reece Topley and the spin of Matt Parkinson. This isn’t a strong bowling line-up in the absence of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes, and Adil Rashid, but has the potential to surprise the opposition.
