If there is one topic currently getting everyone’s attention at the international level, it is the Champions Trophy 2025. Countless meetings are happening, and getting postponed, but the official tournament venue has still not been finalized, leaving aside the schedule. Only a couple of months are left before the Champions Trophy goes live, but the event is still in troubled waters with the venue not being finalized.
For those unaware, BCCI and PCB are having a big brawl with respect to the location with BCCI categorically pointing out the security concerns as the main reason for not travelling to Pakistan, and instead requesting a Hybrid model or a completely new location for CT 2025. However, PCB is yet to agree to this decision, hence the delay in the official announcement of the venue and schedule.
While the tussle may eventually fall in India’s favor being the most powerful board, the next important discussion is with respect to India’s squad for the event. ODIs are a rarity these days, and India have mostly been playing for either Indian Premier League, T20Is or Tests these days. There is also only one ODI series being scheduled for India before the Champions Trophy, leaving the team with less time to find the ideal squad. Nevertheless, let’s analyze all players, and find the best possible squad list for Team India for Champions Trophy 2025.
Champions Trophy 2025 Best Squad List for Team India:
Batters
If we keep the 2023 ODI World Cup as the base to decide the ideal squad, it will be easier to analyze the squad. Anyway, the Indian team hasn’t played a lot of ODIs since the last World Cup, so there may not be major changes. If we talk about the batters in the squad, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, and Shreyas Iyer will be sure-shot starters in the squad.
With these four batters almost fixed, India doesn’t have any other pure batter who has cemented his place in the Indian ODI team. Sure, there are likes of Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sai Sudharsan, etc., but these players haven’t had the impact to confirm their place in the ODI Squad. So, aside from these batters, the Indian team will then focus on playing wicket-keeper batters.
WKs
For the wicket-keeper batters, the Indian team has three solid options that they will mostly look at, and those are KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson. India need a left-hander in the batting department, and at present Rishabh Pant seems an ideal bet among batters. Aside from Pant, KL Rahul will be there for sure, and Sanju Samson may play purely for his batting abilities.
All-rounders
Coming to all-rounders, there shouldn’t be much debate in this space, and India will mostly opt for three all-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel. These three all-rounders have been with the team for good time period now, and are ideal in the team setup. However, to accommodate a second spinner, India can also opt for an x-factor in the form of Nitish Reddy in place of Axar Patel; but this doesn’t look feasible for now.
Bowlers
Talking about the bowling lineup, the team will mostly go ahead with 1 spin and 4 pacers combination. For the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav should lead this area. Whereas for the pace department, Jasprit Bumrah should lead this area with support from Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. In addition, the team may opt for a second spinner or fourth pacer. However, given the pitch conditions, a fourth pacer may be preferred. Among the probable options, Arshdeep Singh seems the best bet.
