Rohit Sharma to lead as we look at the strongest predicted playing 11 for the 2022 Team India vs Bangladesh 1st ODI.
Update: Mohammed Shami has been ruled out of the Bangladesh ODI series due to a shoulder injury. Umran Malik has replaced him. So, the following article has been updated accordingly.
Just a few days post the commencement of the ODI series vs New Zealand, India would be beginning the ODI series vs Bangladesh. While India are mostly playing a new squad against Bangladesh, there are quite a few players who will be traveling all the way from New Zealand to Bangladesh.
Out of a total of 16 players who will feature in the ODI series vs Bangladesh, the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, and Shardul Thakur will be traveling all the way to Bangladesh, the very next day after the end of New Zealand series.
With a relatively new squad that will be playing the Bangladesh ODI series, the focus will be on how India utilize their batting-order given that India have as many as 9 options in the batting category. Things would also be interesting to see how India fit in Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Shikhar Dhawan together.
So, with just a few days left for the match, let’s look at the strongest predicted playing 11 for the 2022 India vs Bangladesh 1st ODI. Before that, let’s look at the official squad for Team India, which has gone a few changes recently. Meanwhile, per a leading website, Betway, India are favorite to win the series with their odds at 1.05.

Team India’s Playing 11
Batters
If the 2023 World Cup strategy is anything to look by, India would look at opening Rohit Sharma with Shikhar Dhawan. This is the sole reason why Shikhar Dhawan has been playing ODIs that he would open alongside Rohit Sharma. So, even as Shubman Gill has been pressing for a spot as an opener, he would have to wait for the senior ones to not play.
India should also not make the mistake of playing KL Rahul as the opener. His position for ODIs is number 5, and that should stay that way. Whereas Rishabh Pant is a designated keeper, and we should definitely see him play in the middle-order alongside KL Rahul.
But with Hardik Pandya rested for the Bangladesh ODIs and the fact that India are playing a relatively weak side, Bangladesh. they can do away with playing only 5 bowlers. So, India can accommodate Shreyas Iyer at 6, who has had a dream run in the ODIs. If not, India can play an extra bowler in the form of Shardul Thakur.
Apart from this, India would be back to see Virat Kohli at the number 3 position in the ODIs. He hasn’t played a lot of ODIs off late. In the last two years, Kohli has played only 11 ODIs. He hasn’t had good success scoring just 304 runs at an average of 27.6 and a strike rate of 79.2.
All-rounders / Spinners
Coming to the spinners of the squad, India have only the spin all-rounders to select. With only three options to look at, India would have to play two of them. Had Jadeja been there, he would have been an ideal number 6. But with him ruled out, India can’t afford to play Axar and Sundar at 6 and 7 respectively as that would weaken the batting. So, with Iyer at 6, India Axar at 7, and Sundar at 8 would be a good way forward.
Pacers
Talking about the pacers, this looks like a straight-forward selection. Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj would have been the leading pacers of the squad. But with Mohammed Shami ruled out, Umran Malik be in the playing 11 if he is available. If not, Shardul Thakur should be the first-choice option. Meanwhile, between Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur, India are more-likely to select Deepak Chahar as he is a good powerplay bowler.
However, India can also select Shardul Thakur and play 4 pacers if Shreyas Iyer doesn’t play as a finisher. This way, India would play 6 bowlers, and would have to rely on the batting of Axar, Shahbaz, and Chahar as a strong case for the lower-order. But India may as well look to play an extra batter in the form of Shreyas Iyer.
India vs Bangladesh 2022 – 1st ODI Predicted Playing 11 for Team India:
Rohit Sharma (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj & Umran Malik
India vs Bangladesh 2022 – 1st ODI Predicted Playing 11 for Bangladesh:
Litton Das (c), Anamul Haq, Shakib Al Hasan, Najmul Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman & Ebadot Hossain
So, that’s about the strongest predicted playing 11 for the 2022 India vs Bangladesh ODI series. With Jadeja not there to strengthen the lower-order, India won’t mind going in with a 5 bowler strategy against a relatively weaker team, Bangladesh. This would also help India test their bowling.
