India vs SA 2022: Official ODI Series Squad for Indian Team
KL Rahul to lead, while Jasprit Bumrah to be his deputy as we look at the complete official squad for Team India for the 2022 ODI series vs South Africa (SA).
Please note, Jayant Yadav and Navdeep Saini have been added in the squad in place of Washington Sundar and Mohammed Siraj respectively. While Washington Sundar couldn’t travel to South Africa due to covid, Mohammed Siraj is injured after having suffered an injury in the second Test match. The following article has been updated accordingly.
After a stunning start to the Test series where India were able to capture the Centurion fortress, BCCI announced the official squad for Team India for the 3-match ODI series vs South Africa starting January 19. A total of 18 players have been selected including a few new names that would definitely make their debut.
With Team India’s first-choice captain, Rohit Sharma yet to recover, Team India’s vice-captain, KL Rahul has been announced as the Captain of the squad with a fresh name Jasprit Bumrah donning the Vice-Captaincy duties. This would be the first time Virat Kohli would be playing only as a player since his captaincy retirement ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021.
From the selected squad of 18 players, only 8 players are also representing the Test squad. The rest 10 Players shall be traveling to South Africa a few days ahead of the series. Interestingly, the squad has a lot of new names and personnel changes. So, without wasting much of the time, let’s look at the complete official squad of Team India for the 2022 ODI series vs South Africa (SA).
Openers:
Shikhar Dhawan // Ishan Kishan (WK) // Ruturaj Gaikwad
In the form of sad news, Team India’s first-choice captain and opener, Rohit Sharma is unavailable for the ODI series owing to injury concerns. With Rohit not there, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been given an opportunity given his stunning form in the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Shikhar Dhawan has managed to retain his place as an opener. Whereas Ishan Kishan has been selected as the keeper-opener in the squad.
Middle-order:
KL Rahul (C) // Rishabh Pant (WK) // Shreyas Iyer // Suryakumar Yadav // Virat Kohli
Although this is not the first time KL Rahul would be captaining India, it would be a special moment to see Virat Kohli playing under the fresh leadership of KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah. It would also be interesting to see what position KL bats. He has been batting in the middle-order in ODIs for more than a year now. But with Rohit not there, we may also see KL Rahul at the top.
The rest of the middle-order comprises of regular Indian players in the form of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and former captain Virat Kohli. The team also has Ishan Kishan, who can double his role as an opener as well as a middle-order batter. Rishabh Pant shall be the primary wicket-keeper of the squad.
All-rounders:
Venkatesh Iyer // Jayant Yadav
The biggest omission in the all-rounders’ category is of the Pandya brothers. Both were a part of the previous ODI series, but are now not included. While Hardik might have been rested, Krunal for sure has been dropped. Instead of them, Team India shall see Venkatesh Iyer and Jayant Yadav as the all-rounders in the squad.
Spinners:
Ravichandran Ashwin // Yuzvendra Chahal
The spin department sees the return of veteran Ravichandran Ashwin, who last played an ODI in 2017. Ashwin was earlier roped in the T20 World Cup squad as a replacement for Washington Sundar. Having performed superbly in the 5 matches he played, a call in the ODI Squad was expected – more so with Jadeja not being there. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal has managed to retain his place as the only wrist spinner in the squad.
Pacers:
Bhuvneshwar Kumar // Deepak Chahar // Jasprit Bumrah // Navdeep Saini // Prasidh Krishna // Shardul Thakur
Team India selected as many 6 pacers in the squad owing to South Africa’s pace-friendly conditions. From the selected pacers, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar are regular pacers in the limited-overs squad. Prasidh Krishna had only started featuring in the playing 11. Whereas Mohammed Siraj is replaced by Navdeep Saini as thr former suffers injury in thw Test series.
